New 3rd gen CTS Vsport or new 2nd gen CTS-V?

This is not an easy decision. I'm considering either the new Cadillac CTS Vsport or a still available new second generation CTS-V wagon (with a manual). I know manual wagon and all, but still, the new CTS Vsport is a great car. Here's how I see each of them, which way would you go? I'm looking to lease so want to stay with a new vehicle. Any other ideas for a 4-door sports sedan up to $70k MSRP? The M, AMG, and S cars are priced out of my range so don't go there.

Kinja'd!!!

The new CTS Vsport has a great chassis, the latest mag suspension, E-diff borrowed from the C7, great technology (color HUD, customizable TFT display, radar cruise, etc), and a great 420hp twin turbo V6. I test drove one and thought it a better handling car than the previous CTS-V. The interior is much nicer too - materials and design. It is automatic only, but it performs well.

Kinja'd!!!

The second generation CTS-V is old school muscle, but can be had with a real manual transmission and there is no arguing against the LSA supercharged V8 or wagon goodness. It is quicker and faster than the new Vsport. Pretty much everything else about the car pales next to the new CTS though.

Considering they are priced very similarly, which way do you go?

If it's the wagon I'd get the old one. If not, then I'd get the new one.

I'd say the wagon. While the new CTS really is a great car, I still hate the interior and CUE. I still prefer the simpler interface of older cars over the overly complicated systems in almost all new cars. Oh, and 556hp!

Yeah, it would be the wagon. I really doubt there will ever be another 500+ hp wagon with a real manual transmission ever again. I hope I'm wrong, but that is something I am considering here...

Basically everything I was gonna say. Less complication, more acceleration!

You could go the Chevy SS route. Their about $50K and offer V-8 goodness. C & D liked it in a recent comparo with the Dodge Charger SRT-8.

I have a strong feeling they won't sell make the V sport in wagon form (wow that would be ecstasy) If I were in your situation I would go for the wagon. Although I do agree with you that it is a really tough decision. The new CTS is beautiful.

Better chassis, better handling, braking? not sure, better equipped - mechanically (eDiff) and toys, better interior.. I'd go CTS Vsport. @400lbs heavier, the wagon isn't that much quicker .

Get the wagon.

The new V-sport is like the new McDonald's quarter pounders: same price as the old angus third pounders, but less meat

Don't pay more for less. Get the wagon.

I thought about the SS, but for some reason I'm not feeling it. Maybe I should test drive one. Somehow I have it in my head that the non-boosted 6.2 is a bit of a dog, and that's a fairly heavy car.

Right, Vsport is said to have a 4.4 0-60 and the CTS-V is around 4.1 (with a manual). On the street there isn't much different, and I really did think the Vsport felt more nimble and handled better. I should mention that I had a CTS-V sedan for a couple years, so I know what they can do.

Supercharged V8, with a nice sound, manual transmission, in a rear drive wagon though, probably never have that chance again and could upgrade to the new CTS-V when it is out in a couple years.

I looked at the SS in person along with the new CTS, I'd much rather have the V sport after seeing it in person. It wasn't even a competition.

That last paragraph in your comment is the sacrifice that Opponauts are always coming back to. That in itself, the V8; the sound; the manny tranny; wagon, isnt the sacrifice, the sacrifice is not getting the *better* car so you can have those other things.
What sacrifices for either car are you willing to make and which is the sacrifice you can live with daily?

The determining factor from Gen II to Gen III for me would be MPG. The supercharged engine barely gets 20 highway. I love the Gen II V. But yikes.

If you do a lot of driving, that would get expensive.

The new will be there later, the old is going extinct. You need that CTS-V wagon. Go that way for wagon hoonage then get the new CTS-V or Vsport in a couple years.

That's the thing, when you line up the new Vsport against the gen2 CTS-V, it is like comparing a C7 to a C6. No denying the C7 is the better car, even though the C6 Z06/ZR1 is ultimately faster. Tough call for sure....

Yeah this would be my primary DD and see at least 15k miles/year. It would see action most days where there isn't frozen precip. So MPG is something I'm considering, but it isn't in the top 5. Still, the Vsport gets 25 or so on the highway, or 25% better than the CTS-V.

Also, I've worked in Cadillac Service recently.

Supercharged LS over turbo 3.6, anyday. Durability, there is no comparison. If you plan on staying under warranty the entire time, no sweat. Otherwise, LS.

Stats shouldn't make the decision. I would test drive both. I think that

-The depreciation factor on the 2nd gen CTS-V Wagon would be far less than that of the Vsport

-6MT will make it so much more fun to drive (paddle shifters really don't do much for me at all, personally.)

-An LS motor is much more appealing than the turbo V6 with the sound and all

-The wagon is unique and a very special car, whereas the Vsport is "just" an exceptional one

-The wagon would have a manual transmission

-Again, the wagon would have a manual transmission

-The one with a manual transmission is a wagon

-The manual tranny wagon has a roaring V8

-Did I mention you row your own?

-Meaning it has 3 pedals?

-The V will be instantly collectible, as well.

Haha thanks. Either way I will be insanely jealous and both cars are fantastic, so go with whichever you prefer (that is, if you prefer the V wagon).

All jokes aside, the Vsport performs incredibly well and is really a respectable sports sedan. Both are extremely capable cars, and it really comes down to personal preference. The V wagon is a very different car, and not everyone's cup of tea—just because it is so revered on Oppo doesn't mean that it is the obligatory choice (although I really don't think I have to say that, I know I would be influenced by what the community chooses). Good luck and congrats on the upcoming purchase!

490 hp 6.4 n/a Hemi. 8 speed auto. Our auto group has two in stock.

What's not to like? Full time awd. No roasting the tires or oppo.

It all depends on how much you prize a manual, the new CTS will undoubtedly handle better, but 556hp hooked up to a stick would be very very hard for me to pass up. So ask yourself this, "Why wouldn't I get the V?"

The S4 comes in right under your price range, and they're fantastic cars. The only thing I really resent about mine is the Gran-Turismo-inspired exhaust note.

I've wondered if I got the Vsport that I would regret not getting the real V. Either way, I'd look at moving to the new 3rd gen V when it is out in a couple years.

I like the S4, but is a little small for my needs right now. Is the exhaust too loud? Or does it sound artificial?

I like the mid-size sedan size, and the S6 is great but getting out of my price range.

That's kind of what I figured, given the other cars you're looking at.

The S6 is easily the best car I've ever driven. If you can manage to stretch your price range a bit, I can't recommend it enough. Great for embarrassing Mustang bros at stop lights.

In that case, get the old V while you can still experience it, because odds are the new one won't have the manual option.

Update: I decided on the Vsport. It is the better handling car and I got a great deal that I couldn't pass up. I previously had a CTS-V manual sedan, so I felt like experiencing something new is worthwhile.

Great choice. Experiencing as much different vehicles is what an automotive enthusiast should really do.
